If you’ve been dreaming about powder days, fresh tracks and snow-covered peaks, the 2026-27 winter season may be one to watch.

El Nino is strengthening in the Pacific, and current forecasts point toward the possibility of a very strong – and potentially historic – event heading into winter. While no long-range forecast can guarantee how much snow will fall in Breckenridge, there’s plenty happening in the atmosphere to get skiers and snowboarders excited about the season ahead.

So, wax those skis, dust off the goggles and start dreaming about winter. Here’s what we know so far.

First, What Is El Nino?

El Nino is a naturally occurring climate pattern associated with unusually warm ocean temperatures in the tropical Pacific. Those warmer waters can influence atmospheric circulation and shift weather patterns across North America. And this year’s El Nino is getting attention.

According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, El Nino is strengthening, with a greater than 90% chance of becoming a very strong event during fall and winter 2026-27. NOAA also reports a 69% chance that the event could reach a historic level during the October-December period, exceeding the strength of previous El Nino events in its record dating to 1950.

In other words: This isn’t your average El Nino.

What Could El Nino Mean for Breckenridge?

Here’s where every skier and snowboarder starts asking the important question: Does that mean more snow?

Maybe – but Mother Nature always gets the final say.

El Nino can influence storm tracks and precipitation patterns across the United States, but its effects vary significantly by region, elevation and individual storm. Even a very strong El Nino cannot guarantee a blockbuster snow year in Breckenridge.

What it can do is create an interesting setup for the winter ahead.

NOAA notes that stronger El Nino events increase the likelihood of experiencing weather patterns typically associated with El Nino. With the current event forecast to strengthen through the end of 2026, there will be plenty for snow lovers to keep an eye on as winter approaches.

And when you’re talking about a ski town sitting high in the Colorado Rockies, the possibility of an active winter weather pattern is more than enough reason to start getting excited.
