Top Winter Events in Breckenridge

Lauren Parker / November 20, 2025

If it isn’t the snowy mountains, the charming town, the delicious meals, or the many winter weather activities that are drawing you to Breckenridge, it must be one of these fantastic events. Are you on the fence about what dates to visit our town? Here are a few dates to steer you in the right direction.

Breckenridge Ski Resort Opening Day

November 7, 2025

We might not be the first mountain to open this season, but we are the most fun! Dust off your gear and celebrate the first day on the slopes for the 2025-2026 ski season. Check out our packing guide for a quick refresher on what to bring to the mountain. Grab your favorite costume or retro outfit, as the mountain will be covered in colorful skiers! We don’t like to take ourselves too seriously around here, and opening day is no exception. Still looking for a place to stay? Our top picks are true slopeside resorts like these!

The Lighting of Breckenridge and Running of the Santas

December 6, 2025

There is nothing quite as magical as watching thousands of twinkling lights illuminate the charming town of Breckenridge. This is the day we’ve all been waiting for-the day that truly begins the holiday season. Snow is falling, the mountain is covered in skiers, the restaurants are full, and people all over come to see Breckenridge transform into a real-life snow globe. Before the lighting, you’ll get to witness hundreds of Santas racing down Main Street.

Ullr Fest

December 18–20, 2025

At the 62nd annual Ullr fest, we’ll call on Ullr, the Norse god of snow, to ask for a great winter! Take part in or witness the world’s longest shotski “unofficial” world record-breaking attempt, and enjoy a Main Street Parade Thursday. Come back throughout the weekend for comedy night and community ice skating!

Rockstar Energy Open

December 19–21, 2025

Breckenridge Ski Resort is excited to present the first ever Rockstar Energy Open in Breckenridge during 2025! This free three-day festival will combine snowboarding competitions with live music, art, and more. Both men and women will be participating in various competition events including a brand new rider-designed course and unique multi-terrain setup.

International Snow Sculpture Championships

January 24–February 3, 2026

Using only hand tools, sixteen teams from around the globe visit our quaint town of Breckenridge to create intricately carved sculptures in just five days. Watch as teams of four transform 20-foot-tall 25-ton blocks of snow into incredible frozen works of art. After 94 long hours of sculpting, the art pieces will be available for public viewing 24/7 until February 3 at 5 p.m.

(Please check GoBreck website for more detailed schedule).

Different Skis for Different Conditions

breckenridge

Different Skis for Different Conditions

November 17, 2025 / Lily Windsor

If you have been to Breckenridge, chances are you’ve had the opportunity to ski powder or enjoy some mixed and ungroomed terrain. From stunning “bluebird” days to frequent snowstorms, the chance of beautiful weather and great conditions is almost a guarantee on a winter vacation. Gliding through soft powder after a fresh snowstorm is a dream of a day for many skiers. For others, that dream may be setting deep carves into a groomed run or perfecting that new trick in the terrain park. There are many different types of skiing you can try when you visit Breckenridge and with that, various skis designed to tackle your favorite terrain. Finding the right pair of skis can give you the best experience as you explore all the ways you can hit the slopes. With that in mind, here is a breakdown of some of the most common types of skis for different conditions you are likely to encounter at Breckenridge.

All-Mountain Skis

As the name suggests, all-mountain skis are built to handle just about anything that the mountain will throw at you. These are usually built with a medium width, lighter and shorter than other types of skis and are occasionally twin tipped, meaning the tip and the tail of the ski both curve upwards. All-mountain skis are perfect for someone who wants to try different types of skiing or simply values the ability to tackle a variety of terrain on a single pair of skis. Breckenridge Ski Resort offers so many different types of terrain across its five peaks, you cannot go wrong with a pair of skis designed to shred a variety of conditions.

Our Recommendations:

  • Nordica Enforcer 100
  • Völkl M6 Mantra
  • Rossingnol Sender 94 Ti

Carving Skis

Carving skis are typically narrower and stiffer than other skis and have a subtle hourglass shape that is thinner under the boot and wider at the tip and tail of the skis. These qualities allow the edges of the ski to dig into the snow and make it easier to turn. Carving skis are most effective on groomed runs and enable skiers to easily make graceful carving turns. However, they are less effective in powder and on off-piste terrain, meaning that with these skis, you are more confined to groomed runs alone. However, you’ll find no shortage of groomed runs at Breckenridge Ski Resort if you choose a pair of carving skis.

Our Recommendations:

  • Stöckli Laser WRT Pro
  • Nordica Spitfire DC 74 Pro
  • Völkl Deacon 76

Powder Skis

Powder skis are built for exactly what their name implies: surfing through deep, fluffy powder. They are typically the widest skis available because they are built to keep you afloat even in the deepest fresh snow. They are usually a bit more flexible than an all-mountain ski, and many models are uniquely designed in that the ski itself offers a reverse camber (or rocker), meaning the tip and tail curve up from the underfoot of the ski. Powder skis are best suited to deeper snow and are a bit less effective on groomed runs and mixed conditions like moguls and spring conditions. Powder skis would still be a great choice for Breckenridge Ski Resort’s many powder stashes that can often be found off of Peak 6, Peak 7, and Peak 10, as well as for making tracks after fresh snowstorms.

Our Recommendations:

  • Salomon QST Blank
  • Rossignol Sender Free 110
  • Atomic Bent Chetler 120

Freestyle Skis

These used to be known as “twin tips” and are primarily lighter, shorter and narrower than typical all-mountain skis. This is to increase their ease of maneuverability as freestyle skis are specifically designed for the park and pipe. These skis always have twin tips and generally a more symmetrical setup than other skis. They are designed to make riding switch (backwards) easier. Peak 8’s Park Lane Terrain Park offers many features to shred on a new pair of freestyle skis. There is no better time to loop the terrain park than this winter, as Breckenridge Ski Resort spent the summer upgrading the 5-Chair, which serves the terrain park area, to a new high-speed lift. Two smaller terrain parks can be found on Peak 9 as well. Although freestyle skis are specifically designed for the park, they can be decent all-mountain skis, too.

Our Recommendations:

  • Fischer Nightstick 97
  • Völkl Revolt 104
  • Line Chronic 94

Things To Do in Breckenridge Besides Ski and Snowboard

November 18, 2025 / Lily Windsor

Breckenridge in the winter looks like a snow globe surrounded by mountain peaks and blanketed in powder. While skiing and snowboarding are the main attractions, there’s no shortage of winter fun for those who prefer to explore beyond the slopes. Whether you want an off-day activity or an alternative adventure, here are some of the best things to do in Breckenridge this winter.

Nordic Skiing in Breckenridge

If you want to enjoy the outdoors at a slower pace, head to one of Breckenridge’s Nordic centers. Both the Breckenridge Nordic Center and the Gold Run Nordic Center rent cross-country skis and snowshoes and offer miles of groomed trails through stunning alpine scenery. Nordic skiing is a fantastic workout and a peaceful way to see winter landscapes away from the chairlifts.

Carter Park Sledding Hill

For a fun, family-friendly outing, grab a sled and head to Carter Park at the south end of town. The hill is perfect for kids and adults alike. Pick up a free sled from the “sled shed” or purchase one at City Market or Peekaboo Toys on Main Street. End the day with hot chocolate from one of Breckenridge’s cozy cafés.

Dog Sledding in Breckenridge

Looking for something unforgettable? Good Times Adventures offers dog-sledding tours through peaceful forest trails. Led by a team of enthusiastic huskies, these tours are a one-of-a-kind way to experience the beauty of the Colorado backcountry.

Snowmobiling in Breckenridge

If speed and adventure are more your style, snowmobiling is a thrilling way to explore the mountains. Guided tours are available from Breckenridge Snowmobiling Tours, offering routes for all skill levels. Expect sweeping views, crisp air, and plenty of photo opportunities along the way.

Ice Skating in Breckenridge

Nothing says winter quite like a spin on the ice. The Steven C. West Ice Area offers both indoor and outdoor skating with public sessions and hockey opportunities. You can also glide across the Grand Colorado on Peak 8’s outdoor ice rink, complete with unbeatable mountain views.

Sleigh Rides Near Breckenridge

Experience the magic of winter on a horse-drawn sleigh ride. Snuggle up under a blanket, sip hot cocoa, and enjoy the snowy scenery. Breckenridge Stables operates evening sleigh rides on Peak 9 with incredible views of town lights, while Golden Horseshoe Tours combines a sleigh ride with dinner and a show at a recreated mining camp.

Ready Paint Fire Art Studio

When it’s time to warm up indoors, visit Ready Paint Fire, a local art studio offering pottery, mosaics, painting, and candle-making. It’s a relaxing way to spend a winter afternoon and a great spot to create your own Breckenridge souvenir. Call 970-771-4341 for class information.

Breck Create Classes

Breck Create is another great place to find fun, indoor activities in the winter. Offering a myriad of classes such as pottery, jewelry making, metalsmithing, glassblowing, painting and so much more, Breck Create is the perfect opportunity to take a cold winter day to learn something new and have a project to show for it! Oftentimes, there are multiple classes offered a week. Be sure to check out the event calendar at their website.

Mountain Top Exploratorium

Perfect for families, Mountain Top Exploratorium is a children’s museum filled with interactive exhibits and educational fun. Kids can learn about mountain wildlife, try hands-on activities, and let their imaginations run wild. Visit their website for hours and special events.

Arcades in Breckenridge

In the past couple of years Breckenridge has become home to a small handful of unique arcades. Looking for some dinner with entertainment? Head to Downstairs at Eric’s to enjoy pizza, wings, and a large selection of games on the side. A little walk away down Main Street sits the I Scream Arcade, found upstairs above a local ice cream shop. This is a ticket arcade, where tickets won in the games can be used to purchase fun souvenirs! Down on the south end of Breckenridge sits a candy shop called Rocketfizz where you can slow down, grab a soda, and go play some classic, nostalgic arcade games.

Escape Rooms

Feel like solving a fast-paced puzzle with family or a group of friends? Breckenridge boasts multiple escape rooms with many fun and unique themes to entertain any group. Local escape rooms can be found at Escape Room Breckenridge, Mountain Time Escape Rooms, World of Escapes, and at the Grand Colorado on Peak 8! Check them out and find the perfect adventure for your group!

Historic Breckenridge

Breckenridge is home to a rich town history, complete with dozens of historic buildings and sites. There are many museums and exhibits dotted throughout the town, as well as walking tours where a guide leads your group to different locations throughout Breckenridge. It is a fantastic way to learn more about where you are staying, and the history of a unique little mining town. Check out breckhistory.org for information on museums, tours, and Breckenridge history in general.

Breckenridge Recreation Center

If you need a break from the cold, the Breckenridge Recreation Center offers indoor tennis and pickleball courts, a rock-climbing wall, fitness facilities, pools, and hot tubs. It’s the perfect way to stay active on a snowy day.

Breckenridge Library

Check out this beautiful historic building that is home to Breckenridge’s South Branch Library. It is the perfect place to get cozy with a book or bring the kids as it has an amazing children’s section. The library also holds multiple events a month for both kids and adults. Be sure to check out their calendar and website for fun activities!

Take a Walk Down Main Street

No trip to Breckenridge is complete without a stroll down Main Street. Twinkling lights, boutique shops, and snow-covered storefronts make it a magical experience. Stop by a local café for a latte or hot chocolate and discover why downtown Breckenridge captures the heart of every visitor.

Tree Runs in Breckenridge

November 05, 2025 / Anna Bowman

Deep in the forest, dodging trees, heart pounding, legs burning, waist-deep in powder, and a grin you can’t contain. This is what pure mountain joy feels like. There is nothing better than finding untouched powder stashes hidden among the trees at Breckenridge. If you’re a tree run fanatic, check out a few of our favorites at Breckenridge.

PEAK 6 | Wonderland and Elysian Fields

Known for its blend of intermediate-friendly glades and wide-open bowls, Peak 6 gives skiers plenty of space to roam. Wonderland and Elysian Fields offer gentle tree spacing with soft snow that lasts long after a storm. Access them easily from the Kensho SuperChair for sweeping mountain views and calm, flowing turns through the trees.

PEAK 7 | Ore Bucket and Angel’s Rest

Peak 7 combines rolling terrain with glades that balance excitement and ease. Ore Bucket is a great warm-up for intermediate skiers looking to test their tree-skiing skills, while Angel’s Rest delivers a slightly steeper challenge. Both areas are accessible from the Independence SuperChair and provide smooth transitions between open runs and gladed terrain.

PEAK 8 | Contest Bowl and Beyond

At the heart of Breckenridge, Peak 8 offers some of the mountain’s most dynamic tree skiing. Contest Bowl, off the Colorado SuperChair, features tighter lines and quick turns that advanced skiers will love. If you’re searching for untouched powder, hike a short distance from the Horseshoe Bowl T-Bar to find secluded stashes surrounded by stunning alpine views.

PEAK 9 | The Windows

The Windows is a local favorite for good reason. Its perfectly spaced glades let you flow through the forest with rhythm and speed, and the snow here tends to stay soft thanks to its shaded aspect. Access The Windows from the E-Chair, then drop in for a quintessential Breckenridge tree-skiing experience

PEAK 10 | Mustang and Dark Rider

For expert skiers, Peak 10 is where things get serious. Mustang and Dark Rider deliver steep pitches, tight trees, and deep powder pockets that challenge even the most seasoned riders. These runs are accessible from the Falcon SuperChair and are best tackled with confidence and strong control. The reward is some of the best advanced tree skiing in Colorado.

There are tons of awesome tree runs full of freshies at Breckenridge Ski Resort. For your reference, here is a map of Breckenridge Ski Resort. One way to ensure you get all that powder is to get up early and beat the crowds. The next time you visit Breckenridge Ski Resort, check out one of these tree runs! If you’re looking for ski in/ski out discounted lodging, click here!

Safety Reminder

Only attempt tree runs if you are confident in your skills. Remember, no two tree runs are the same, and conditions change quickly. Always ski with a buddy, keep your phone charged, and stay aware of your surroundings. Stay safe, have fun, and we will see you in the trees.
