2019 Ullr Fest
January 7th, 2019 / By: Emily Lawless
“ULLR” – “The son of the grain goddess Sif, and therefore the stepson of the thunder god Thor. Ullr is an excellent archer, hunter, skater, and skier, handsome, warlike, and especially apt deity to invoke before a duel.” ~Norse Mythology
The town of Breckenridge has come together to worship the god of snow in January for 55 years running. Join us from January 9th to January 12th with your Viking hats, fur coats, and party people for the 56th year. Festivities begin on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Riverwalk Center with the crowning of the Ullr King and Queen followed by Breck’s Got Talent; a talent show where the first 200 attendees receive a free beer.
Thursday, my personal favorite day of Ullr Fest, begins at 4:00 p.m. with the Breckenridge Distillery “unofficial” record-breaking attempt of shots on skis. Breckenridge and Park City have a rivalry every year attempting to break each other’s record. Breckenridge’s Main Street is then flooded with outstanding parade floats built by Summit County residents at 4:30 p.m. After the floats trickle through Main Street and you’ve collected all your candy, head to the South Gondola Parking Lot for the Ullr Bonfire. Bring your Christmas Tree to contribute to the flame.
After you have nursed your hangover, jump into Maggie Pond at 2:00 p.m. at the Ullr Ice Plunge. Next, warm back up at the National Cocktail Throwdown Finale at the Breckenridge Distillery. Nine of the best bartenders in the nation compete to prepare their best bourbon punch. Purchase your tickets HERE. Once that buzz hits you, take the bus or shuttle over to the River Walk Center, starting at 8:00 p.m. laugh it off with Comedy Night. This is a fundraiser benefiting Breckenridge’s Carriage House Early Learning Center and costs $25. You can purchase your tickets HERE.
Saturday, the last and final day to celebrate Ullr Fest. Start at 1:15 p.m. with the whole family at Stephen C. West Ice Arena for the Ice Skating Party. Shortly after, the fat tire Ullr Bike Race will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Gold Run Nordic Center. Register the whole family HERE. Lastly, to wind down the entire weekend, sit back and relax watching the Wild and Scenic Film Festival. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and show starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Riverwalk Center. Tickets and more information can be found HERE.
Ullr is one of locals’ favorite festivals of the year. Start off 2019 by joining us in Breckenridge for a weekend filled with fun.
