Summit County Golf Update

Golfer at Breckenridge Golf ClubMay in Breckenridge and Summit County has been a little on the wet side. But, the moisture we have received in Summit has been much needed. Currently, the snowpack is almost back to normal levels. However, this has proved to be a challenge to the golf courses’ hopes for early openings. Even though most of the golf courses will be opening later in May and early June this year, they will be opening with fantastic conditions. Never fear though, if you are planning a trip to the high country this weekend and want to get a little golf in, the Raven golf course in Silverthorne (15 miles north) is opening this Friday! The River Course in Keystone will be opening the weekend of May 17th Here is the rundown on the five Summit County golf courses.

Breckenridge Golf Club – Opening in the 3rd or 4th week of May.

Breckenridge Golf Club was just named #35 on the list of the country’s top 50 municipal golf courses by Golfweek Magazine. Breckenridge boasts the only Jack Nicklaus designed public golf course in the world. Offering 27 challenging holes, the Breckenridge Golf Course sits at an elevation of 9,324 feet. At this altitude, the golf ball flies farther and straighter than at lower elevations, as there is less air resistance.

Keystone River Course – Opening May 17th.

Step up to the first tee on the River Course and be blown away. The River Course in Keystone is a dramatic mountain course with amazing elevation changes and breathtaking scenery.  The par-35 front nine is oriented around the path of the Snake River and the par-36 back nine winds through a lodgepole pine forest. Impressive elevation changes, variable bunkers, water hazards, and five sets of tees on each hole combine to challenge golfers of all abilities.

Keystone Ranch Course – Opening May 31st.

This Robert Trent Jones Jr. course is the older (and more challenging) of the 2 golf courses in Keystone. The front nine is a traditional course with slight elevation changes while the back nine is a challenging links course that winds though Colorado sage brush and pines.

The Raven at Three Peaks Golf Club – Opening May 10th.

The Raven is the most challenging golf course in Summit County. It also traditionally opens the earliest. The Raven is located on the north end of Silverthorne, which is commonly referred to Summit County’s “Banana Belt,” as it sees less snow and warmer temps then most of the rest of the county.  The Raven has a slope rating of 146 and was ranked as the #1 golf experience in Colorado by Avid Golfer Magazine.

Copper Creek at Copper Mountain – Opening June 14th.

Located at the base of Copper Mountain Ski Resort, Copper Creek is the highest golf course in elevation and traditionally the latest to open. Designed by Pete and Perry Dye, Copper Creek accommodates the novice golfer from the forward tees while still providing a great test for the accomplished golfer at the back tees. Surrounded by amazing views of the back side of the Ten Mile Range it is a neat change from the mountain views in Breckenridge.

If you are looking for an early spring escape considers golf in the High Country this May. With Golf available starting Friday, low early season rates and small crowds. Breckenridge is a perfect choice for a weekend getaway.
